Pickaxe 2

Looks like gonna have a Ruby weekend! After the Don Box post, I had the joy of receiving my Pickaxe 2 book at home!
A really great book nicely balanced between tutorial and reference material. I used to read the Ruby documentation online, but the paper based version really worth the (low) price.

The future of Java and others: Don Box?s point of view

Don Box just posted a quite courageous point of view about the potential evolution of computer languages. I see nothing more to say than I fully agree with him. I am currently exactly in the same position as him: learning SmallTalk and Ruby, (re)discovering object orientation, and pleasure of programming. Moreover, the comments are quite interesting. […]

The future of Java

I just discovered the excellent Groovy language leaded by Guillaume Laforge which has a quite clear introduction of its objectives:
Groovy is an agile dynamic language for the Java 2 Platform that has many of the features that people like so much in languages like Python, Ruby and Smalltalk, making them available to Java developers using […]

Architecture agile II

Doug Engelbart 1968 demo

Following the Alan Kay?s interview, I looked for the mentioned Doug Engelbart 1968 demo. Here it is. Amazing to see on this ?twilight zone? video the guy demoing things such as mouse, word processor, hyperlinks, video conferencing, etc? You really can measure how computer science has been “pop culture” since those pioneering times.

Alan Kay interview: a must read!

LtU pointed a very, very, very nice interview of Alan Kay in ACM Queue. I wanted to give you some extract, but actually, every paragraph worth a citation.Anyway, I extract this one for you:
SF So Smalltalk is to Shakespeare as Excel is to car crashes in the TV culture?AK No, if you look at it […]

Ruby versus the rest of the world

Avi Bryant did a comparison between Ruby, Python and Smalltalk (of course). A mandatory reading if you want to understand the fondamental differences between langages. He started from the famous ?Ten Things a Java Programmer Should Know About Ruby?. One of those things is: ?Don’t worry about early performance optimization?Well, as it has been commented on […]

Dojo

Learning by doing

Christophe Thibaut made a very nice description of the Dojo.Of course, the Dojo is all about learning and improving our skills at programming computers. For me, it links directly to the XP approach for software project management. I really feel that XP allows you to learn the domain of your application, and improve your skill […]
